The Evening Star Dies, the Morning Star Is Born: Venus Retrograde, October 2026

In early October, look west and find that bright, steady light. By November it will be gone from the sky; by December it will rise again in the east before dawn. In between, Venus goes down into the underworld, and it takes you with it.

Gold-gilded engraving of the Sumerian goddess Inanna descending, the eight-pointed star of Venus above her head, against a midnight-blue sky

One evening in early October, before the light has fully gone, turn to the west. A little above the line where the Sun went down, before the other stars have come out, you will see a single light. Brighter than the rest, calm, not twinkling. It is not a star. It is Venus. The evening star.

Look at this light closely, because it is about to disappear. Through October and November it will slip slowly out of the western sky, vanish completely for a while, and then, weeks later, reappear somewhere entirely different: in the east, just before dawn. The same planet. The same light. Only this time it comes before the Sun, not behind it.

In the language of astronomy we call this Venus retrograde. But about four thousand years ago, the people who watched this same disappearance from the mud-brick towers of Mesopotamia used a different language. They said this light was a goddess, and that the goddess was going down into the underworld.

A calendar of one light

Venus stops on October 3, at 8 degrees and 30 minutes of Scorpio, and begins to turn back. In astrology this is called a station: the planet holds its breath for a moment, then changes direction. It does not really go backward, of course. No planet ever truly does. This is a picture created as Earth overtakes Venus from the inside, an orbital illusion. But the sky always speaks to us in pictures, and this picture has a forty-five day story.

The retrograde ends on November 13, this time at 22 degrees and 52 minutes of Libra. There Venus stops again and turns forward. In between, right at the center, is October 24: the inferior conjunction of Venus with the Sun. Venus passes exactly between Earth and the Sun, at the threshold of Scorpio, at that last degree almost touching Libra, and goes invisible. This is the moment classical astrology calls cazimi, the heart of the Sun. The planet steps into the Sun's very core and is cleansed there. It is the turning point of the whole retrograde. Descent before it, ascent after.

For those who feel these things early: Venus first entered this stretch on August 31, stepping onto the very same 22 degrees and 52 minutes where the retrograde will end (this is the pre-shadow). It will not fully clear its own tracks until December 15, when it returns to the 8 degrees and 30 minutes where it began (the post-shadow). Mark October 3 and November 13 on the calendar. But the story had already begun in late August, and it will stay with you until the middle of December.

The goddess who went down

Her name was Inanna. Queen of heaven in Sumer, goddess of love and of war, and in the sky her body was Venus. One day Inanna set her mind on the Great Below, the land of the dead, the dark kingdom of her sister Ereshkigal, and decided to go down. Why? Some tablets say a funeral rite, others an ambition. But the reason is not the point. The descent is the point.

Before she left, she made a promise to Ninshubur, her most faithful servant: if I have not returned in three days, knock on the doors of the gods, beg them to bring me back. Then she put on her most magnificent self. She set the crown of heaven on her head, the string of lapis lazuli at her throat, the double strand of beads across her chest, the gold ring on her arm, the royal robe on her shoulders. The goddess went down wearing all her power, all her ornament.

The underworld had seven gates. At each one the gatekeeper Neti stopped her and asked for a piece of her. At the first gate they took her crown. "What is this?" Inanna asked. "Be silent," they said, "the laws of the underworld are not questioned." At the second gate her beads, at the third the ornament across her chest, at the fourth, the fifth, the sixth, one by one, and at the seventh gate, last of all, her robe. Through each gate she passed a little more undressed, a little less a goddess. When she reached the bottom, nothing was left on her. No crown, no gold, no title. She was naked.

And there, before her sister, before the judges, Inanna died. Ereshkigal fixed the eye of death on her, and the goddess's lifeless body was hung on a hook on the wall. Three days, three nights. Above, Ninshubur kept the vigil, knocking on the doors of the gods one by one. In the end wise Enki made two small creatures from the dirt under his fingernail and sent them down with the water of life and the bread of life. They touched Inanna's body, and the goddess opened her eyes. But not as she had gone down. She came back having seen the underworld, having passed through her own death, and having returned.

Now lift your head and see what this story is really telling. Inanna was Venus, and the Babylonians tracked her journey across the sky in one of the oldest astronomical records humanity has, in cuneiform, with astonishing care. The evening star sinks a little lower in the west each night, drawing toward the Sun: the goddess going down into darkness. At the inferior conjunction, at the very heart, Venus vanishes from the sky entirely for a few days: the three days on the hook. And then it reappears in the east, before dawn: the resurrection. The myth is not a decoration. It is a reading of the sky itself. Four thousand years ago someone lifted their head, saw this light die and rise again, and told it as the story of a goddess so it would not be forgotten. It was not forgotten.

The death of the evening star, the birth of the morning star

At the heart of this retrograde is this: on its journey, Venus turns from one kind of star into another.

The evening star, the Venus you see after sunset, is soft. It is relational. It comes after the Sun, and shines where the Sun's light leaves off. It knows how to love, how to adapt, how to find the beautiful, how to be with another. But it has a shadow: the habit of looking for its worth in someone else's eyes. Does he love me? Am I pretty enough, good enough? The evening star always asks its question outward.

The morning star is someone else. It rises before the Sun. It follows no one; it is the one that announces the day. It carries its light behind no one. This retrograde is exactly the threshold that turns the evening star into the morning star. So here is what happens behind the curtain: the Venus that looks for its worth in another's mirror dies, and the Venus that knows its worth from within is born.

One word ties all forty-five of these days together: self-worth. Love and money both (Venus is the goddess of each) are really two faces of the same question. How much do you value yourself, and who decides that value: you, or someone outside you?

Inanna went to the very bottom stripped of her ornaments, and even naked, even then, she still was. Without the crown, without the gold, she was still Inanna. That is the question this retrograde asks you: if you take off all the ornaments, the titles, the being-liked, what is left? What is left is your real worth. And it is not surrendered at any gate.

Two phases: first the depths of Scorpio, then the light of Libra

The retrograde moves through two signs, and the two signs ask two different questions.

The Scorpio phase (October 3 to 24) is the descent itself. Scorpio is the sign of depth, of intimacy, of shared things. In astrology it carries the tone of the eighth house: joint money, debt, inheritance, trust and betrayal, jealousy, and the unspoken balances of power between two people. For these three weeks Venus calls you beneath the surface. Whatever has stayed buried in a relationship, a partnership, an account, comes up. Its question is sharp: what am I bound to, and is the bond honest?

Here the shadow of Scorpio has to be named plainly. In these weeks jealousy, obsession, the urge to dig into someone's past can flare up. Rereading an old message, wondering about a phone, opening a closed account. Feeling the feeling is human and allowed. Turning it into a weapon is something else. Scorpio's lesson is not to suppress the feeling but to see it and be able to hold it.

Then October 24 arrives, the heart moment. Venus is cleansed at the exact center of the Sun and goes invisible. Inanna's three days on the hook. That gap where one thing has ended and the next has not yet been born. The next day, October 25, Venus steps backward into Libra, and the second half of the story begins.

The Libra phase (October 25 to November 13) is the ascent. Libra is the sign of balance, of justice, of equality in partnership. The tone of the seventh house: one-to-one relationships, and in them a very familiar habit, giving yourself up to keep the peace. Libra is a gracious sign, it does not want to break anything, it loves balance. But sometimes that balance is false: you keep making the concessions, the other keeps taking them, and you both call it harmony. The question of these weeks: where did I abandon myself to keep the peace? Is this relationship truly fair, or only polite?

Scorpio brings up what is buried in the dark; Libra weighs it again in the light. The scales in Libra's hand are not for nothing. The second half of the retrograde is about taking the truth you saw in the first half and measuring the terms again, fairly.

What happened eight years ago?

Venus has a small secret: it drops its retrograde points in almost the same place every eight years. Over eight years it draws that elegant five-pointed star across the sky and comes back, again and again, to the same corner. So this retrograde is not a brand-new story, it is a continuation.

Go back eight years. October, November 2018. Venus was right here, going back between Scorpio and Libra. Ask yourself: that autumn, what happened in your love life, your money, or the value you placed on yourself? Did something close, or was a seed planted? Did a relationship end, begin, get tested? Did you make a decision?

The account you opened then is coming up for its second reckoning now. The autumn of 2026 is the second half of a sentence written in 2018. Remembering the first half helps you understand what is happening now.

Where this retrograde calls you from

This transit does not knock on everyone's door with the same force. It comes mostly from wherever your Sun or rising sign sits.

Four signs are most at the center of this journey. Libra, because the retrograde ends in your sign and the matter is directly your identity, the value you place on yourself. This is your rebirth, but first you have to be stripped of your old self. Scorpio, because the heart moment happens in your sign, and this is the transit that transforms you most deeply. You can truly bury something and turn away, or you can revive it. Taurus, because Venus is your ruler and the retrograde crosses your opposite sign, the axis of relationships. Your partnerships, your one-to-one bonds, are on the table. Aries, because the matter is both your relationships and the resources you share, joint money, the "we" account you build with another.

For the others the voice is quieter but still clear. For Gemini, creativity and the return of an old love. For Cancer, home and matters of the heart. For Leo, a conversation left unsaid for too long. For Virgo, money and self-worth together. For Sagittarius, an honest reckoning with a friendship. For Capricorn, fairness in professional relationships. For Aquarius, a weighing to do with belief and career. For Pisces, the transformation of a deep bond.

A small technical note that helps: fixed signs (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius) feel the first phase, the deep waters of Scorpio, more strongly. Cardinal signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn) hear the second phase, Libra's scales of justice, more sharply. Mutable signs (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces) live the influence more softly, a little more from the observer's chair.

What to postpone, what to do

The most misunderstood thing about retrograde periods is this: life does not stop, some tasks are just badly timed. The sky gives a tendency, never an order. Because Venus is the goddess of beauty, love, and money, these forty-five days are a wise time to hold off on irreversible decisions in exactly those three areas.

Postpone: deep and permanent aesthetic changes. A radical haircut or color, a tattoo, cosmetic surgery, filler, permanent makeup. During Venus retrograde your sense of beauty shifts, and what you say yes to today may look different to you three weeks from now. Temporary experiments are of course free: a wig, a wash-out color, a look you play with, these are games. It is the permanent needle and scissors that should wait.

The same logic holds for the wallet. Big luxury purchases, serious financial commitments, new debt, opening a joint account, co-signing for someone: leave these, if you can, until after November 13, or even until the shadow fully clears in mid-December. And one for the heart: an engagement or marriage decision made on a sudden impulse. The feeling can be real. But a promise made while Venus is invisible may look different once she becomes visible again.

So what do you do? First, meet the return of the old calmly. In this period old lovers, old friends, old jobs, old accounts come back. It is in the nature of this retrograde, just like the things Inanna brought up from the underworld. No panic. Ask a single question: did this thing return to my life to be ended, or to be begun again? Either is possible, but you need to know which. Then, deepen the relationship you already have. The retrograde is a good time not for tearing down but for making honest. Say the unsaid, but with Libra's justice, not Scorpio's weapon. Audit your money too: go over your budget, read your contracts, sort out your debts. The work this retrograde loves is exactly this, not building something new from scratch but reviewing honestly what already exists. And beneath all of it, the real task: separate your self-worth from someone else's approval. That is the true work of these forty-five days. The rest is detail.

The light in the east

On November 13 Venus turns forward again. But its work does not end there. The real beauty comes a little later, in December. One morning, while it is still dark, before the Sun rises, get up and look to the east. There, just above the horizon, you will see that bright light again. The same Venus you said goodbye to in the west in early October. Only now it is not the evening star. Now it opens the day.

Inanna came out of the underworld naked, but not empty. She came back with what she had seen, with having survived, and with a knowledge she could no longer leave at any gate: she had thought her worth was in her crown, yet when the crown was gone, it was still there. That is exactly what this retrograde wants to leave with you. The worth you look for in love, in money, in the mirror is always already in you. You do not have to wait for someone to give it back to you.

When you see that light in the east that morning, perhaps you will remember this.
