The origin of the game
The jigsaw, a lesson cut from a map
The first jigsaw was not a toy but a teaching device. In the 1760s the London mapmaker John Spilsbury mounted a map of Europe on a mahogany board and cut the countries apart along their borders. His aim was to teach geography to the children of the wealthy: set the kingdoms in place with your own hands and you never forget them. These cut boards were called dissected maps. The earliest ones from Spilsbury's shop now rest in museums, and they all carry the same quiet idea: the best way to understand a whole is to rebuild it from its parts.
The name jigsaw came much later. Toward the end of the nineteenth century, fine fretsaws began cutting wood along curving lines, the game took the tool's name, and the famous interlocking tabs were born in the same era. The real boom arrived in the 1930s, during the Great Depression. Amid unemployment and uncertainty, people spread a puzzle across the evening table; it was cheap, it lasted for hours, and setting one small corner of a scattered world back in order simply felt good. Shops even opened that lent puzzles out like libraries lend books.
At House of Zij we carried this old lesson into the sky. A zij is, after all, a map of the stars; here you scatter that map first and rebuild it with your own hands.
